In a fiery and emotional press conference at her Kalighat residence on Tuesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made it clear: she is not stepping down. Despite her Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffering a crushing defeat to the BJP in the state assembly elections, the veteran leader declared she would not resign or visit Raj Bhavan to hand over power.
Speaking to reporters, a visibly shaken but combative Mamata said, “I have not lost. So I will not go to Raj Bhavan. I will not tender my resignation.” She described the results as the “dirtiest election” she has seen in her long political career and claimed her party achieved a “moral victory” even though official numbers tell a different story.
A Landslide Loss for TMC
According to results declared on May 5, the BJP stormed to power with around 207 seats out of 294 in the West Bengal Assembly. Mamata Banerjee herself lost her traditional Bhabanipur seat to her former aide and current rival, Suvendu Adhikari, by a huge margin. TMC’s numbers fell dramatically, marking one of the biggest political upsets in recent Indian history.
Yet Mamata stood firm. She told the world that the people of Bengal had not rejected her — instead, she alleged the mandate was “forcefully looted” through a deep conspiracy involving the Election Commission, central government agencies, and security forces.

She claimed nearly 90 lakh voter names were deleted before polling, counting was deliberately slowed in booths where TMC was leading, and central forces (CRPF) acted like “gunda bahini” to help capture booths and intimidate her workers.
“We fought not just against the BJP, but against the entire system,” she said emotionally. “Officially they may have defeated us through the Election Commission, but morally, we have won the election.”
Mamata also spoke about post-poll threats and violence against TMC supporters, especially women, and promised to continue fighting for democracy from outside the corridors of power.

The TMC supremo thanked leaders from the INDIA opposition bloc — including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Akhilesh Yadav — for their support and calls after the defeat. She hinted that she now sees herself as a “free bird,” ready to strengthen the national fight against the ruling dispensation without the burden of running the state government.

Political observers say this situation is unusual. Normally, a Chief Minister whose party loses majority is expected to resign. However, Mamata has thrown the ball into the court of the Governor and constitutional authorities, saying they should act as per rules.
