Ebola outbreak in DR Congo declared PHEIC by WHO as Bundibugyo strain spreads rapidly with over 700 suspected cases.
By Prime Insight Health Desk
A serious Ebola outbreak is spreading in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola — a rarer type for which there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments.
Current Situation
The outbreak was first detected in Ituri Province, particularly in the health zones of Bunia, Rwampara, and Mongbwalu. It has since spread to parts of North Kivu and possibly South Kivu.
As of the latest reports:
- Over 700 suspected cases
- Around 80–83 confirmed cases
- More than 170 deaths (including both suspected and confirmed)
Many patients are experiencing high fever, severe weakness, body pain, vomiting, and in some cases, bleeding.
Why This Ebola Outbreak Raises Major Concern
Unlike the more common Zaire Ebola strain, the Bundibugyo virus lacks proven medical countermeasures. This makes controlling the outbreak more challenging.
Additional complications include:
- Attacks on treatment centers and patients reportedly leaving isolation facilities
- At least three Red Cross workers killed during response efforts
- High population movement due to conflict and mining activities
The virus has already crossed into Uganda, with several confirmed cases reported in Kampala, linked to travelers from DR Congo.

WHO Declares PHEIC
On May 17, 2026, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus officially declared the situation a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
The declaration was made due to the rapid rise in cases, cross-border spread, ongoing insecurity, and the absence of vaccines for this strain. The national risk level in DR Congo has been raised to “very high.”
Response Efforts Underway
Health authorities and international partners are racing to contain the virus through:
- Enhanced surveillance and contact tracing
- Setting up isolation units
- Improving infection prevention in hospitals
- Safe and dignified burials
- Community engagement to build trust
Organizations such as MSF (Doctors Without Borders), Africa CDC, and the Red Cross are actively supporting the response on the ground. However, persistent insecurity in the region continues to hinder efforts.
Important Advice
Health officials urge anyone in the affected areas experiencing symptoms to seek medical care immediately. Early treatment significantly improves chances of survival.
For travelers:
- Avoid non-essential travel to outbreak zones
- Maintain good hand hygiene
- Monitor health for 21 days after leaving affected areas
WHO has advised against general travel bans, stating they can harm local economies and delay aid. Targeted screening at borders is preferred.
This is the 17th Ebola outbreak in DR Congo in recent history. While the country has experience managing previous outbreaks, the current situation with the Bundibugyo strain presents unique challenges.
