Washington: Trump Strait of Hormuz Tolls warning has triggered fresh global concerns as US President Donald Trump signaled possible future charges on ships passing through the vital waterway following Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement on his social media platform Truth Social, President Trump clarified that no tolls or tariffs will be imposed during the ongoing 60-day ceasefire period. However, he issued a strong warning that the US may introduce Trump Strait of Hormuz Tolls if a permanent peace agreement is not reached within the stipulated timeframe.
“No tolls will be collected in the Strait of Hormuz during the 60-day ceasefire period. There will be no tolls even after that period ends, unless the US decides to impose them. The US may decide to impose tolls if a permanent peace agreement is not reached,” Trump wrote.
Trump further stated that the United States has long acted as a “Guardian Angel” for Middle Eastern nations and suggested that any future toll could serve as compensation for past, present, and future security costs borne by the US.
Iran’s Closure of the Strait of Hormuz
Tensions escalated after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, citing alleged Israeli violations of ceasefire terms in Lebanon. The IRGC warned that any vessel attempting to pass through the strait would face danger and advised commercial ships to avoid the area.
Mohammad Mokhber, advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, accused Washington of failing to fulfill the first condition of the 14-point interim agreement. He emphasized that fuel supplies from the Middle East would not normalize until a comprehensive ceasefire is achieved across all fronts, including Lebanon.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil trade, handling nearly 20% of the world’s petroleum shipments.
