Adani Group Expansion accelerates with major acquisitions in ports, airports, cement and media, reshaping India’s infrastructure landscape through strategic deals.
By Staff Writer: In less than a decade, the Adani Group has moved from being a major ports player to one of the most diversified infrastructure companies in India. A string of large acquisitions in airports, cement, media and logistics has quietly redrawn the map of several key sectors.
From Ports to Full Control of Key Gateways
The shift began with ports. After buying a majority stake in Krishnapatnam Port, Adani Ports completed the purchase of the remaining 25 percent from the Navayuga Group for ₹2,800 crore. The deal gave the company full ownership of a deep-water facility on the east coast and strengthened its ability to handle growing cargo volumes. Later additions such as Karaikal and Gopalpur extended the same strategy — secure strategic locations, then expand capacity.
Airports: Becoming India’s Largest Private Operator
The same approach appeared in aviation. After winning the rights to run six airports under the government’s privatisation programme, the group took management control of Mumbai International Airport through an agreement with the GVK Group. With Navi Mumbai International Airport also under its fold, Adani Airport Holdings now handles a significant share of India’s passenger and cargo traffic. The portfolio gives the group a rare combination of metro and regional airports at a time when air travel in India continues to rise.
Cement: A $10.5 Billion Entry and Rapid Build-Up
The biggest single leap came in 2022. The Adani Group completed the acquisition of Holcim’s Indian cement businesses — Ambuja Cements and ACC — for about $10.5 billion. Overnight it became the country’s second-largest cement producer.
It did not stop there. Ambuja later acquired a majority stake in Sanghi Industries for an enterprise value of roughly ₹5,000 crore, adding a large integrated plant and a captive jetty in Gujarat. Further deals involving Penna Cement and Orient Cement followed, as the group worked to create a single, efficient cement platform.
Media and Distressed Assets
Adani Group Expansion also reached media. The conglomerate first gained control of a major stake linked to NDTV and later completed the purchase of the remaining shares in Quintillion Business Media, the company behind BQ Prime.
In infrastructure, the group successfully bid for Jaiprakash Associates Limited under the insolvency process, securing a package of assets that included valuable land and related businesses after a competitive process and regulatory clearances.

Why the Scale Matters
Taken together, these transactions show a clear pattern: identify strategic assets, move decisively, and integrate them into a larger network of ports, power, logistics and materials. Company filings and exchange disclosures indicate that many of the later deals were funded through internal accruals rather than heavy new debt.
