The Last Bridge Builder
Standing at the head of the staircase in CPI(M)’s A.K. Gopalan Bhawan in Delhi, Sitaram Yechury smiled wryly as a journalist remarked, “You have truly become Rahul Gandhi’s ‘philosopher, friend, and guide’!”
Exhaling a puff of cigarette smoke, he replied, “You people will go and write about this! Mamata Banerjee will think Sitaram is calling the shots in the INDIA alliance. Her anger will then turn against Congress and the entire opposition unity will break.”
This conversation took place before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Yechury had worked hard to keep the INDIA alliance together at any cost.
Decline of Regional Parties
The decline of regional parties has become clearly visible after the recent assembly elections. The BJP and NDA now control 22 states and Union Territories. Powerful regional parties have suffered heavy blows:
- Trinamool Congress lost West Bengal
- DMK was defeated in Tamil Nadu
- RJD weakened in Bihar
- Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP split and are struggling in Maharashtra
- AAP is fighting to survive in Punjab and Delhi
For the first time in fifty years, the Left parties have no government in any state.

Decline of Regional Parties After 2014
For 25 years (1989–2014), coalition politics ruled India. Regional parties were kingmakers. Today, that era is fading fast. Even BJP’s allies — Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu — have much less power than before. The BJP now runs the central government with far greater independence.
Can Congress Benefit from Decline of Regional Parties?
The weakening of regional parties gives Congress a real opportunity to rebuild and regain lost ground. However, major challenges remain.
Regional leaders publicly say they want a strong Congress to defeat the BJP, but they are unwilling to give up even one inch of their own territory. This lack of trust has repeatedly caused seat-sharing failures. Fresh tensions emerged after the recent state elections when Congress supported actor Vijay’s TVK party in Tamil Nadu, upsetting its ally DMK.
Rahul Gandhi’s Mixed Signals
Rahul Gandhi has been giving confusing signals. After losses in Bihar and Tamil Nadu, he openly questioned continuing alliances with RJD and DMK. At the same time, he strongly claims that only Congress can defeat the BJP in an ideological battle.
However, ground reality shows that regional parties have been more successful in stopping the BJP over the last 12 years than Congress in direct contests.
The Big Challenge Before 2029
The BJP has now captured almost the entire eastern region (except Jharkhand) and will look to further strengthen its position for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Congress faces a difficult double task:
- Rebuild itself as a strong national party.
- Maintain working relations with regional parties.
At Sitaram Yechury’s memorial, Rahul Gandhi called him the “bridge-builder” of the INDIA alliance. The most important question today is: Who will become the new bridge-builder for the opposition in the next three years?
Without strong unity and mutual trust, defeating the BJP in 2029 will be an uphill task.
