As Russian airstrikes devastate Ukraine, Zelenskyy appeals to Trump for urgent Patriot missile defense systems to halt hypersonic attacks.

KYIV — In the wake of a catastrophic multi-city air assault, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy appeals to Trump for the immediate transfer of American air defense systems to safeguard failing municipal grids and vulnerable populations.

Overnight, Russian forces unleashed an aggressive wave of 73 missiles and 656 drones across Ukraine, striking five major urban centers simultaneously: Kyiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Poltava, and Kharkiv. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the barrage included eight high-speed hypersonic Tsirkon missiles, which are notoriously difficult for standard anti-air networks to intercept.

The widespread strikes have claimed at least 18 lives, left dozens wounded, and forced rescue teams to race against time to pull survivors from the debris of collapsed apartment complexes.

Severe Civilian Toll and Urban Destruction

The overnight assault caused severe damage to civilian infrastructure, catching families asleep in their homes.

  • In Kyiv: Six people were killed and 66 others injured, including three children. A missile impact triggered a partial collapse of a 24-story residential tower, while falling debris sparked fires near a local kindergarten in the Obolon district. The state power provider reported that electricity was temporarily knocked out for roughly 140,000 residents.

  • In Dnipro: The casualties were particularly devastating, with 12 confirmed dead and 37 injured. Rescuers discovered the body of a three-year-old boy buried beneath a destroyed four-story home. Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov fiercely condemned Moscow, accusing Russian forces of deliberately dropping cluster munitions over highly populated residential neighborhoods.

  • In Kharkiv and Poltava: Residential homes, garages, and public spaces faced relentless bombardment, prompting comparisons from local commentators to historical blitzkrieg rocket attacks.

The Strategic Reason Zelenskyy Appeals to Trump

The sheer volume of the attack exposed a critical vulnerability in Ukraine’s current air defenses. While anti-air units managed to shoot down nearly half of the incoming targets, more than 30 heavy missiles broke through, directly striking civilian infrastructure.

Zelenskyy emphasized that U.S.-supplied Patriot interceptors are the only defensive assets capable of stopping high-speed ballistic and hypersonic threats.

“If Ukraine is not protected from ballistic and other missile strikes, these strikes will continue,” Zelenskyy warned in an urgent social media address. “We definitely need the help of the United States in supplying missiles such as Patriots. We count on the support of our partners.”

The public plea follows an unprecedented, five-page letter sent by Zelenskyy directly to President Trump and the U.S. Congress, warning that Moscow is actively exploiting Ukraine’s dwindling defensive stockpiles as a major battlefield advantage.

Washington’s Supply Constraints

Securing immediate American aid faces significant hurdles. The Trump administration has yet to move on Ukraine’s latest requests, largely due to a global scarcity of Patriot interceptors. A massive portion of U.S. and allied anti-missile stockpiles was heavily depleted earlier this year during intense military engagements involving the U.S. and Israel against Iran.

Despite the defensive strain, Ukrainian officials argue that Russia’s shift toward aggressive civilian terror reflects a desperate military command. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha pointed to Kyiv’s recent success using long-range drones to systematically cripple Russian oil refineries, key ports, and supply corridors leading into occupied Crimea.

“Moscow is losing on the battlefield,” Sybiha stated. “No number of missiles can change this.”

With Ukrainian intelligence warning that Russia has prepared additional stockpiles for a sustained aerial campaign, the pressure now rests squarely on Washington as Zelenskyy appeals to Trump to decide if the U.S. will answer Kyiv’s desperate call.
