West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari to hand over 80 acres of land to BSF today for strengthening security of Chicken’s Neck
By Prime Insight Desk Kolkata: In a major step towards strengthening national security, the West Bengal government has started handing over land for the protection of the strategically important Siliguri Corridor, also known as the Chicken’s Neck.
This narrow strip of land, just 20-21 km wide and 50 km long, lies between Nepal and Bangladesh and is close to the borders of China and Bhutan. It is considered vital for India’s security and connectivity.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to formally hand over land to the Border Security Force (BSF) at Nabanna this afternoon (Wednesday). The state government is also transferring land quickly to the Indian Army and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
According to sources, around 80 acres of land are being made available in the first phase for setting up new Border Outposts and installing barbed-wire fencing along the border.
Fast-Track Action In Chicken’s Neck Security
Soon after taking charge, the new state government set a 45-day deadline to transfer land to the BSF for border security work. Officials say the work is progressing on time.
Since the new government assumed office, land acquisition for more than 50 acres has been completed in record time. In addition, over 30 acres of government (Khas) land and another 88 acres approved in the recent cabinet meeting will also be given to the BSF.
Preparations are also underway to allocate:
- Over 110 acres in Siliguri for an ITBP Battalion Headquarters
- 6-8 acres for the BSF in the region
- 120 acres for the Indian Army in Chopra, North Dinajpur
Seven important roads in this sensitive area have also been handed over to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for better maintenance and development.
Background
The Chicken’s Neck area was recently brought under the protection of the advanced S-400 air defence system during ‘Operation Sindhur’.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier alleged during the Assembly elections that the previous government had delayed land transfer for fencing and outposts due to vote-bank politics. The new government has made border security a top priority.
This swift action is being seen as a strong response to growing concerns over Chinese aggression and instability along the Bangladesh border.
