Innovative brands are transforming agricultural waste—such as banana stems, cacti, mushrooms, pineapple leaves, and apple peels—into stunning “faux leather” that looks and feels like the real thing, without a single animal hide involved.
This eco-friendly alternative is not only winning over conscious shoppers but also catching the eye of Bollywood’s biggest stars. From Amitabh Bachchan and Genelia D’Souza to Deepika Padukone, celebrities are embracing vegan leather. Global luxury houses like Stella McCartney, Christian Dior, and Prada are leading the charge, proving that sustainability and high fashion can coexist beautifully.
What is Vegan Leather?
Traditional leather is derived from animal hides—cow, sheep, snake, horse, and more. In contrast, vegan leather (also called artificial or plant-based leather) is crafted from plant fibers and synthetic components that visually and texturally mimic genuine leather. No animals are harmed in its production, making it a truly cruelty-free option.
How is Vegan Leather Produced?
The magic lies in nature’s own byproducts. Fibers extracted from banana plants, mushrooms, cacti, and pineapple leaves are processed into durable, flexible sheets. Using agricultural waste turns what would otherwise be discarded material into high-value fashion products—a perfect example of circular economy in action.
Unlike traditional leather production, which is water-intensive and generates significant pollution and waste, plant-based alternatives are far gentler on the planet.
Entrepreneur Spotlight: Kaushik Bardhan & Ricorr
One inspiring pioneer is Kaushik Bardhan, founder of the brand Ricorr. Around 2023, he began commercializing “banana leather” by extracting fibers from banana plant stems—an idea rooted in his family’s agro-based background.
“Across the globe, there is currently a strong emphasis on the production of eco-friendly goods. My mother worked on extracting fibers from banana plants. That was when the idea struck me: why not create something new using this material?” — Kaushik Bardhan
He notes that banana fiber itself is not new—South Indian artisans have used it for sarees and other items for 70–80 years. What’s new is its elevation into modern, stylish accessories and apparel, bringing wider awareness and demand.
Are Vegan Leather Products Expensive?
Not as much as you might think. A stylish bag made from banana leather at Ricorr starts at around ₹2,500 to ₹3,000. As the market matures and production scales, prices are expected to become even more accessible.
“ The market for eco-friendly products is still gradually taking shape,” says Kaushik. “There is a need to commercialize these products. If major retail outlets begin stocking them, we can reach a much wider audience.”
Care Tips for Longevity
Like traditional leather, vegan leather requires proper care. Store items at moderate temperatures, avoid prolonged exposure to moisture, and clean regularly to prevent mold or mildew. With thoughtful maintenance, these pieces can last for years while looking as good as new.
The Road Ahead
India, with its vast agricultural resources, is perfectly positioned to become a global leader in plant-based leather. Designers, consumers, and entrepreneurs are increasingly adopting a sustainable mindset—turning waste into wearable art.
As awareness grows, vegan leather is no longer a niche trend. It is the future of responsible fashion—one that looks luxurious, feels premium, and leaves a lighter footprint on the planet.
