The INDIA alliance has sent a formal letter to the Chief Justice of India raising concerns about the Systematic Identification of Voters (SIR) process. The INDIA Bloc Letter to CJI was signed by multiple opposition leaders.
New Delhi: The INDIA Bloc has formally approached the Chief Justice of India, sending a letter that raises multiple questions regarding the ongoing Systematic Identification of Voters (SIR) process.
In the INDIA Bloc Letter to CJI, the opposition alliance has alleged that the SIR mechanism is being used to facilitate large-scale irregularities in the electoral rolls. The letter, dispatched on Tuesday, carries the signatures of 21 constituent parties of the INDIA bloc.
Prominent leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Uddhav Thackeray, and Mallikarjun Kharge have signed the document. Notably, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and DMK have also put their signatures on the INDIA Bloc Letter to CJI, despite their varying levels of formal association with the alliance in recent months.
Key Allegations in the Letter
The INDIA Bloc Letter to CJI states that “when everything is at stake, Indian democracy looks solely to the judiciary.” It claims that votes have been or are being stolen through the SIR process and cites examples from states where polling has concluded, including Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Bihar.
The letter reportedly details specific instances where the Election Commission’s actions allegedly violated constitutional provisions and electoral rules. It also seeks a detailed report on how the SIR process has influenced election outcomes.
Background of the Move
The decision to write the INDIA Bloc Letter to CJI was taken during a meeting of the alliance held on June 8. Although the meeting was attended by 21 parties, the letter was sent nearly three weeks later, coinciding with the commencement of the SIR process in Delhi and Karnataka.
Opposition parties have consistently opposed the SIR process since its introduction, maintaining their criticism even after electoral setbacks in several states, including West Bengal.
Political analysts have described the inclusion of AAP and DMK signatures in the INDIA Bloc Letter to CJI as significant, given that AAP is not a formal constituent of the INDIA bloc and DMK had skipped some recent alliance meetings.
