The real friction began post-elections. Instead of sitting on the opposition benches with the DMK, the Congress party unilaterally severed its 11-year-old ties with the Dravidian giant. Chasing power-sharing opportunities, Congress jumped ship to support the TVK government during its crucial floor test, successfully bargaining for two ministerial berths in the new Cabinet.
Compounding the insult, other long-term DMK allies—including the VCK, IUML, CPI, and CPM—followed Congress’s lead to join the TVK-led coalition. Following instructions from the party high command, senior DMK leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi dispatched an urgent missive to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Citing “changed political circumstances,” the DMK requested that its Members of Parliament be assigned seats entirely separate from the Congress benches.
